Musical performances to watch in Seoul despite the pandemic.

Korea is probably one of the few countries in the world where pandemic didn’t completely block cultural life. Certainly, there are restrictions and measures to be taken by both organizers and the audience, but there are still some performances to enjoy in Seoul.

Sejong Center, National Theater of Korea and Seoul Arts Center are offering a wide range of domestic concerts and recitals.

Alongside with the wide range of national performances, Seoul Arts Center has announced Saint Petersburg Ballet Theater’s La Bayadere and Swan Lake to be performed November, 11-12 and 14-15, respectively.

As far as the Korean traditional music performances go, National Gugak Center (NGC) cancelled their Saturdays Gugak concerts and Dadam performances, and delayed the Wednesdays Korean Traditional Dance performances. Despite this, NGC launched online performances of Journey to the Music of Joseon and Cheong-Choon, Cheong-eo-ram that can be watched for free on NGC YouTube and NaverTV channels.

When it comes to foreign musical performances, things are a lot more complicated due to the worldwide quarantine measures.

All foreign performances at Sejong Center have been put on hold until further notice. Despite the hopes for 2020 to become a festive year marking such events, like the 70th Anniversary of Spain and Korea Diplomatic Relations and 30th Anniversary of Korea-Russia Diplomatic Relations, all foreign musical events have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The National Theater of Korea, which is also celebrating its 70th Anniversary since its establishment in 1950, has cancelled all the foreign performances in the near future. Even the 2020 Korean Traditional Music Class for Foreigners at the National Gugak Center has been cancelled.

The only foreign show to be currently watched in Seoul and later in Daegu, is the original Phantom of the Opera musical. It came back to Korea after a 7 year break and is now playing at the Blue Square Theater until August, 7th. Andrew Lloyd Webber proudly announced that it is the only major show playing anywhere on the planet right now.

Taking place of all the cultural events in Korea at the moment became possible thanks to the country’s advanced measures of handling the COVID-19 situation on the national level, giving people the opportunity to enjoy theatrical and musical performances even during the pandemic.
